INAUGURAL SPEECH BY MICHAEL NARH DAVIES, PRESIDENT ELECT OF THE PROFESSIONAL AND MANAGERIAL STAFF UNION(PMSU), ON JUNE 10, 2021 AT THE FORECOURT OF THE HEAD OFFICE OF THE BANK.
Introduction.
Mr. Chairman, Management staff, the General Secretary, ICU and his entourage, Comrades, Fellow members of staff, Ladies and Gentlemen, all other protocols observed.
I deem it a great privilege to stand before you to give my inaugural address, having been elected to a second term as the PMSU Chairman of NIB.
Comrades, it might interest you to know that this is the 4th inaugural speech I am delivering, in my capacity as a Union Chairman. Twice as the Local Union Chairman and now another two terms as the PMSU Chairman.
It is my strong believe that this unprecedented feat in the history of NIB and ICU, which I consider as a relevant experience, would obviously translate into a better performance of the Union and the Bank in general.
Achievement.
Comrades, though we have outlined a number of achievements on our “Deliverable Chart” for your attention during the election and still available for your reference, it is worth reiterating that the Union has been very transparent and accountable in its financials. For the first time, we have introduced standard accounting practices and reporting system. We have also for the first time, introduced technology in delivery of our welfare packages including acquisition and disbursement of loans. Also, the Union as a stakeholder of the Bank, played a key role in its recapitalization and sustainability.
However, Comrades, though we have worked tirelessly to acquire land for staff to build their own homes, we must admit that there are pending land recovery issues mainly from irregularities of our predecessors, the details of which we are all aware.
Challenges of the Bank.
Comrades, among the key challenges of the Bank, is its full recapitalization. Thus it becomes uneasy for the Bank to operate in full capacity to achieve the desired results for its stakeholders. We wish to use this medium to once again appeal to the President of the Republic of Ghana through the Ministry of Finance, to speed up processes to the get the Bank run in full capacity.
Comrades, it is well known that the salary structure of the Bank is not that competitive compared to the industry however, we all know the challenges. But then, we have the believe that things will change soon.
The way forward.
Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
As a Union, we pledge our support to management in every good undertaking and we owe it a duty to protect the Bank from failing. While we urge Management and Board to keep to good corporate governance practices, we continue to encourage every staff to always be at work early and respect colleagues and superiors. We urge all of you to completely disassociate yourselves from any act capable of affecting productivity such as pilfering, lateness to work, delineation of duty and any act that could smear the image of the Bank.
Colleagues, let us at all times maintain the highest level of discipline as professionals.
Conclusion.
Finally, I wish to thank you all for a very successful election.
Long Live Ghana,
Long live NIB
Long live ICU
Long live PMSU
I thank you all for your attention.
